How to Choose an SEO Company in India: 12 Questions (2026)

To choose an SEO company in India, verify three things before anything else: proof of rankings they've achieved for named clients, transparency about their methods and reporting, and contract terms that let you leave if they underperform. Any agency that fails one of these three tests will waste your budget - regardless of price.

India has thousands of SEO providers, from world-class agencies to spreadsheet-and-spam operations charging ₹5,000/month. The price tags don't tell you which is which. These 12 questions will.

The 12 Questions

12 questions to ask an <a href=SEO agency before signing infographic">

Proof and track record

1. "Show me three clients you've ranked, with the exact keywords." Vague "we increased traffic 300%" claims mean nothing without names and keywords you can verify yourself in a Google search. (This is why we publish ours: SmileArt Dental at #1 for "sedation dentist Yukon Oklahoma," HubcapZone at #3 for "Ford Wheel Simulators," The Key Crew at #4 for "Locksmith San Diego" - see case studies.)

2. "Have you worked in my industry or one with similar competition?" Ranking a local salon and ranking a national fintech are different sports.

3. "Can I speak to a current client?" Reviews can be curated; a live reference call is harder to fake. Cross-check Google reviews, Clutch, and Upwork/Fiverr profiles for consistency.

Methods and transparency

4. "What exactly will you do in the first 90 days?" A real agency describes an audit, a strategy document, technical fixes, and a content/link plan. A bad one says "optimization and submissions."

5. "How do you build links?" The single most important technical question. Acceptable answers involve editorial outreach, digital PR, and content that earns links. Run from anyone mentioning bulk directories, guaranteed link counts at rupee-per-link rates, or "private networks."

6. "Who will actually work on my account?" Many agencies sell with seniors and deliver with untrained juniors across 50+ accounts. Ask for the named strategist and how many clients they handle.

7. "How are you adapting to AI search?" A 2026 filter question. Competent agencies can explain AI Overviews, GEO, and how they track AI citations. Blank stares mean their playbook is from 2019.

Reporting and terms

8. "What does your monthly report show?" You want rankings, organic traffic, conversions/leads, and work completed - ideally in a live dashboard. "Activity reports" listing 40 directory submissions are a red flag.

9. "What contract length do you require?" Month-to-month or 90-day terms show confidence. 12-month lock-ins with heavy exit penalties shift all risk onto you.

10. "Who owns the content, links, and accounts?" Everything built with your money - content, GBP access, analytics - must belong to you. Some agencies hold assets hostage on exit.

11. "What happens if results don't come?" Honest agencies discuss review checkpoints and course corrections. Dishonest ones promise guarantees. Nobody can guarantee rankings - Google says so itself.

12. "Why are you priced where you are?" A good agency can defend its price with deliverables. If a quote is dramatically below the market ranges (see our SEO cost guide), the corners being cut are content quality and link safety - the two things that get sites penalized.

7 Instant Red Flags

7 <a href=SEO agency red flags infographic">

  1. Guaranteed #1 rankings or "results in 7 days"
  2. Secret or proprietary techniques they won't explain
  3. No verifiable client names or case studies
  4. Cold outreach claiming your site has "critical errors" they found
  5. Link quantity promises (e.g., "200 backlinks/month")
  6. No named team members anywhere on their site
  7. Pressure to sign a long lock-in today for a "discount"

Quick Scorecard

Score each candidate 1 - 5 on: verifiable results, industry fit, method transparency, reporting quality, contract fairness, communication, and AI-search readiness. Below 25/35, keep looking. Comparing several agencies? Our Top 10 SEO Companies in India breakdown is a useful starting shortlist.

FAQs

How much should I pay an SEO company in India? ₹25,000 - ₹85,000/month covers most SMB needs from a legitimate agency; local-only campaigns can start around ₹15,000 - ₹25,000. Treat sub-₹10,000 offers as a warning sign, not a bargain.

How long should I give an SEO agency to show results? Expect visible ranking movement by 60 - 90 days and meaningful lead impact by month 6. Judge the first 90 days on process quality (audit depth, fixes shipped, content quality), not final results.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency? Freelancers suit small, single-channel projects. Agencies suit anything needing technical SEO + content + links + ads coordination. The failure mode of freelancers is bandwidth; the failure mode of agencies is junior staffing - question 6 covers that.

Is it safe to hire an Indian SEO company for a US/UK business? Yes - India serves a large share of the global SEO market at 30 - 50% lower cost. Apply the same 12 questions; geography matters less than verifiable results and transparent methods.

Can an SEO company guarantee first-page rankings? No. Google explicitly warns against ranking guarantees. Agencies can guarantee process, deliverables, and transparency - never positions.
